XTERRA Jersey Devil
 OFF-ROAD TRIATHLON

I want to inform everyone that after 8 years of holding the XTERRA Jersey Devil, we've made the decision to no longer hold the race. Being Race Director of the XTERRA Jersey Devil has meant a great deal to me over the years. When I decided to start the race over 8 years ago it was when New Jersey lacked an XTERRA race in the area. As a seasoned XTERRA racer, I went into this hoping that I could put on a quality race. With the help of my family and friends in the form of volunteers, the Citta Boy Scout Camp, Wells Mills Park, Amity Acres Girl Scout Camp, and most importantly the racers who turned out every year, I feel I definitely succeeded in doing that for the life of the XTERRA Jersey Devil. It's consistently had one of the higher finisher totals year after year; and I have made a lot of great friends and connections during my years of XTERRA racing and race directing. I am sure I will continue these relationships for the rest of my life. So it is certainly with a heavy heart that I am making the decision to no longer hold the race.

The XTERRA Jersey Devil is a family/friend run race, we are not a full time race management organization, and this is the only race that I direct. We put on the race with the goal of donating our profits back to the Boy Scout camp who hosted the race, and never paid ourselves a dime. This year XTERRA came out with revised/increased license fees, along with other changes that will also increase the overhead total and in turn significantly lower our profitability. Combined with the fact that we moved to MA three years ago, it's become harder and harder to rationalize the many days/hours required to continue to put on the race. With the implementation of these increased fees, I fear this may be a common theme across many of the smaller race organizers. And I am not OK with raising the registration prices to make up for these added costs, essentially passing the added expense that XTERRA has implemented on to the average off-road triathlon racer who budgets every year to maintain and buy equipment, train, travel and race the XTERRA races that have become increasingly more spread out throughout the country.

I understand and appreciate some of these changes will create a more centralized and consistent/stream-lined presentation, such as the implementation of a common website and one registration software. My hope is that changes like these will only better those races that are put on by larger race companies. I am certainly sad to see the end of the XTERRA Jersey Devil, however please understand that I hope XTERRA will continue to grow. I will moreover lend my support as a racer, friend and/or volunteer to the XTERRA races that continue after these changes, in support of those directors who will persevere. Perhaps someday the XTERRA Jersey Devil can re-join the XTERRA community, but for now it is cancelled indefinitely.

I want to finish with a shout-out for the XTERRA Way Over Yonder, held in northern NJ and scheduled for May 18, 2019. If you have not done this race during its first 2 years, please check it out in 2019, you will not be disappointed. I am looking forward to the 2019 season and I'll see you out there!

Sincerely,

Bob Horn
ex-XTERRA Jersey Devil Race Director

COURSE PREVIEWING: If you do go down to Barnegat to
preview the course please park at Wells Mills County Park in Waretown and pick up the course there.  The Citta Scout Reservation is a private Scout Camp and is not open to the public, so please do not park at the Scout Camp.  On most weekdays it is quiet at the Scout Camp and if you do ride or run through you should be fine, just tread lightly, and if you see anyone please be kind and considerate.  On weekends the Scout Camp is usually crowded.  So if you do go on the weekend please stay out of the Scout Camp.  About 90% of the bike course can be previewed without going into the Scout Camp.  Look for official full course preview days about a month before the race.

Race timing: was done by SPLIT SECOND RACING,

which is Race Management by Doug Rice, also of

Race Forum.  There will be 5 splits, swim to T1,
